Wuwang Bridge is located at 139Km+886 ~ 140Km+156 on Taiwan Hwy 17. It was built in November 1998, and near 20 years old now. Due to the road closure during the construction of the Taiwan Hwy 61 at Kuenni - Northgate section, large cars and the heavy trucks were de-routed to Hwy 17, which has reached the Wuwang Bridge’s bearable limit, and also the foundation of the Wuwang Bridge was washed down by the Qiushui River, causing the riverbed surface to decrease, and then causing some bridge decks to have cracks and bridge piers to decent. In order to improve the safety of passage thru the bridge, it’s to carry out the local bridge pier reconstruction work.

 

The main scope of this reconstruction project is in the interval of P5~P14 (139K+886.0~140K+156.0). The main bridge is 270 meters long and 19 meters wide. The pile structure column pier of the lower structure (2.5M in diameter, 6 columns per pier, totaling 2,058M), the upper structure type is reserved for each span PCI beam (30Mx2), and the use of PCI beam system for the use of P5~P14 section has 16 existing girders (old PCI beam may be used only if when two parties to participate in the survey and certified by 3rd party technician.) There are 60 new side-by-side box girder bridges in the middle (37+4@34+37=210M), including full-bridge AC and guardrails (including central guardrails). The expansion joints are updated with the additional application of Taipower, Chunghwa Telecom and utility water. In addition, during the construction period, driftwood and garbage removal within 50 meters of the upper and lower reaches of the work area will be handled. Before the reconstruction, there were 10 bridge pier foundations for P5~P14. The foundations of P6 and P13 piers were rebuilt in the original pier foundation and other structures need to be demolished, and the foundation piles can be removed to start the new bridge pier foundation project. The remaining P7~P12 pier foundations ( Block 6), because the span is longer than the original structure after the reconstruction, the new bridge pier number is P7'~P11' (5 seats) after the reconstruction.

 

The construction period is 800 calendar days. The downstream side of construction in the project is part of an important wetland of the Northgate (national level), in order to ensure the natural flood detention function of the wetland, and to maintain biodiversity and promote the ecological protection of the wetland, the project will not be started before consulting the central competent authority, and properly handling the wetland maintenance according to the opinions, and obtain the permission of the central competent authority for construction. At the same time, because the project is located in the fast river steam area, the water level will be constantly monitored during the construction period, and a good flood passage section will be maintained. It is expected that after the completion of the project, in addition to improving the bearing capacity of the bridge, it can also provide convenient transportation traffics to and from Tainan City, provide a safer road for passengers and enhance local prosperity.
